For fans of The Danish Girl, an extraordinary transgender love story about self-belief and the true nature of courage.
Best friends since childhood, life takes very different courses for Will and Tom when they leave school. Tom joins the army to become a man. Will goes to university and discovers he's not. When Tom turns up on Will's doorstep almost 10 years later, he's disillusioned and broken after surviving Northern Ireland during the 1970s troubles, and with a broken marriage and no future. Will, on the other hand, has just embarked on a completely new future for himself - in his case, a very different kind of self; a woman called Billie.
As Will transitions from male to female, so the boyhood friendship between Tom and Will changes too. Initial shock and repulsion on Tom's part becomes grudging respect, and eventually something quite different. But life - and falling in love - is never that simple; and especially not when it's in the face of prejudice, fear, and lost courage.
Chained Melodies (Audible Audio Edition) Rob Groves Debrah Martin Books
There are not many books around these days that will touch base on characters going through transition. It is very refreshing that author Deborah Martin would express this through her writing and in such a beautiful, understanding way."Chained Melodies" is kind of a take of the book itself even in it's title. Will/Bllie and Tom are bonded through the "chain" of friendship through the years. Although they go through their own personal growth and change, the chain remains unbroken. The "Melody" of it all is that they still flow together despite their different paths.
Tom goes through his heartbreak with his failing marriage. Not only that but fighting in Northern Ireland. Billie recognizes who she truly is and everyone around her have their own opinions, but Tom still accepts her for who she truly is. That, my friend, is true love and friendship.
This is a non-traditional story, yes. A love story, in a way. But it is a story that many should consume. It truly is a masterpiece!

Chained Melodies (Audible Audio Edition) Rob Groves Debrah Martin Books Reviews
Every so often a book comes along that promises to be something unique and enjoyable and Chained Melodies is one of those books. As you open the first pages and are pulled into the first person narrative of the story, you are guided through the pitfalls of reality by characters that are well-rounded and believable.
There are times when the choice of first, second or third person narrative has a huge impact of the story that is being told and this is one of those times. The use of the first person narrative is an interesting choice that greatly adds to the plot. With a first person perspective, the reader is instantly drawn into this story and given a frame with which to see the events of the story through. You aren’t simply being told what is happening, you are sharing in the experience of this story with the characters as they go through pain and chaos, striving for something more than what they have been left with.
The narrative also allows the characters of this book to develop on their own terms, it gives them the chance to be complete individuals with thoughts that they share with the reader but not the other characters as well as their shortcomings and goals in life.
What makes this book really special, however, is not just the unusual choice of plot, but the friendship between Tom and Will. Friendship that is forged in adversity is said to be especially strong, something that this book takes full advantage of.
There are very few contemporary novels that I would gladly recommend to other people, but this is a book that everyone should read as only those with the hardest of hearts will not be touched by this tale of love and friendship.
In 1995, the night before he is to be released from 8 years in prison, Tom (once the village oaf who joined the RA to police Northern Ireland in the 80's) is reading the diary of his boyhood friend. As Tom reads Will's thoughts, and reminisces the same era in his own life, Will overcomes every internal doubt, every external SLUR to become Billie, a woman. In an era with no capacity to comprehend, much less accept his transition, Tom must question the very definition of manhood. All the while, the reader is left to wonder why Tom is incarcerated, and what happened to Billie.
“The thing is this; love, and everything to do with love shouldn’t be a trap. Love is meant to set you free, not imprison you. If you feel trapped by love, then it isn’t love. It takes courage to give and even more courage to give away. You can give love, but you can’t expect to receive it and then trap it in return. You cannot chain a butterfly to you simply because you think it’s beautiful.”
In a gorgeously phrased, exquisitely conceived work, Debrah Martin presents the era's tribulations, real wars, gender wars, and the power of love to transcend pain. The manuscript is poignant, yet neither maudlin nor sensational, and whimsically poetic while never losing its focus on weighty issues the definitions of masculinity and femininity, courage, humanity and self-respect.
Brava!
This is a heart warming and touching book that really grabbed me. It is the story of two boys who become best of friends, despite being so different. The bond they share and the twists and turns their lives take are gripping. The tale of coming of age, questioning their sexuality and coming to terms with who they truly are. It is a beautiful book and the characters of Tom and Will are done to perfection. It has a great flow and is easy to read and really makes the reader stop and think about sexuality and facing the truth about people and the challenges many face. Debrah Martin did an incredible job in the writing of this book and as always I very much enjoyed it. This is poignant and raw and a heartfelt endeavor on her part. She is one of my favorite authors and I look forward to her next book. I recommend this with high regards. It is a different genre but it is a lovely read.
